Northeast Ohio’s own David Ryland made the trek to California this past December to run his very first 50 mile trail race. This wasn’t just any race though, it was The North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Mile Championship race, one of the most competitive trail races in the world. David didn’t just run the beautiful NorCal coarse, he crushed it, finishing 12th overall in a “who’s who” in trail running line-up. We are so proud of David’s amazing accomplishment and are excited to be able to share his story about the epic race with you. David is truly a class act. Super friendly guy both on and off the trail.

The North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Mile Championship
Golden Gate National Recreation Area CA
David ran his 50 mile debut with an amazing finish time of 6:45:17! That is a 8:10 minutes per mile pace. David achieved 12th overall male, and 1st in age division M 20-24. What is even more incredible about David’s performance is to know just how competitive the NFECS 50 is. It is arguably one of the most competitive Ultras and certainly the most competitive 50 mile trail race in the world.
Zach Miller won the 2016 race with a crushing 5:56:03.
The Championship event held in San Francisco, CA, in December introduced the largest prize purse in the sport of ultra-trail racing ($30,000 total), offering $10,000 to the top male and female runners in the 50 Mile distance, which still stands today as the largest pay out in the sport. The race was first launched in 2007 and has grown in popularity ever since.
